Protect the ozone layer; we only have one!

16/09/2020

The COVID-19 pandemic is yet another reminder of the pressing need to protect the planet if we are to prevent unbalances that lead to worldwide problems.

To mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, 16 September, we have put together a list of seven actions you can take to help the ozone layer regenerate. Although we have recently found out that the hole in the ozone layer is shrinking, we should all band together and do our part so that it closes up completely!

  • Do not buy sprays or aerosols containing chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases.
  • Limit your car use: try walking, biking or using public transport.
  • If you are going on a long trip and must take the car, make sure you map out the shortest route possible. This will minimize pollutant emissions and you will save on petrol too!
  • Use energy-efficient light bulbs. You will be doing both the environment and your purse a favour!
  • Do not purchase food packaged on polystyrene trays; look for paper trays or biodegradable bags instead.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of your freezer to prevent refrigerant gas leaks, and make sure to take it to a designated collection point when it stops working.
  • Do not leave your electrical devices on standby when you are not using them (for example, at night) and unplug them.

It is up to all of us to take care of our environment. Now you can share these simple tips so that everyone does their part to preserve the ozone layer. Remember, we only have one!
